William J. Ashenfelter, age 87 of Jasper, Alabama, died Monday, December 21, 2009 at Hospice of West Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Born on February 17, 1922 in Centerville, Indiana, he was the son of the late Charles L & Margaret M. (Parker) Ashenfelter. Preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. He was a 1940 graduate of Hollansburg Ohio High School and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during W.W. II. Member of the First Presbyterian Church in Jasper, AL; Jasper Rotary Club; Masonic Lodge and was a Red Cross Volunteer. In 1993 he retired as Personal Manager from Marshall Durbin in Jasper after 35 years of service.
Survivor by his wife, Alice Jean (Fleisch) Ashenfelter of Jasper, Alabama; daughters & son-in-law, Drs. Malenna & Ray Sumrall of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and Natalie Ashenfelter of Columbia, S.C.; Sister: Marcia Richardson of Decatur, AL; Two grandchildren: Trey Lipscomb and William Jason Lipscomb; Two Great Grandchildren: Kate Lipscomb and Cali Lipscomb.
Graveside services will be 1:00 P.M. Monday December 28, 2009 at Spring Lawn Cemetery in New Paris, Ohio with full military honors provided the Preble County Honor Guard. Dr. Ray Sumrall, son-in-law, will officiate. The family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in lieu of flowers.
