Stanley S. Pugh, age 86, of Camden, OH died Monday morning, July 24, 2006 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. Born on June 25, 1920 in Hamilton, Ohio, he was the son of the late Vandimer & Lucinda (Surface) Pugh. Stanley completed 8 years of school in Hamilton and left home during the depression, traveling with a circus and finding employment where he could. He frequently returned home and spent much time at the Hamilton Airport working for the Hogan family. Eventually he got a job at Meyer Motors as a mechanic and was then hired into a machinist apprenticeship at Niles Tool Works. On June 25th 1941 he married Ethel Preble and joined the Navy in October 1942. He served aboard the USS Hornet (CV12) as an original crew member in charge of maintenance for the night fighters. Stanley was a lifetime aviation enthusiast, ship modeler, conservationist, farmer, master mechanic, sportsman and antique machinery collector. He was an avid reader and traveler. In 1976 he retired from the Fisher Body in Hamilton as a machine repairman. He bought a farm in Preble County in 1961 where he enjoyed the rest of his life. He served as Boy Scout Master for troop 14 in Fairfield, Ohio back in the 1950's earning membership in the “Order of the Arrow”. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hamilton and is truly one of the last of the old time Preble County Farmers. Preceded in death by his wife of 57 years Ethel (Preble) Pugh in 1998; Son: Stanley G. Pugh in 2005; Brother: George Pugh in 1996; Sisters: Mary Emerson in 1988 and Dorothy Pugh in 1994.
Survived by Sons & Daughters-In-Law: Glenn F. & Elaine K. Pugh of Camden, OH and Ronald L. & Patricia A. Pugh of Eaton, OH. 6 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren, one Cousin: Robert (Karol) Surface of Jamestown, OH.
Funeral service will be 10:00 am Friday, July 28, 2006 at Nein- Barnes Funeral Home- 249 North Main Street- Camden, Ohio with Dr. Dennis M. Metzger and Rev. William C. Brantingham officiating. Interment will be held in Fairview Cemetery in Gratis, OH with full military honors provided by the Preble County Honor Guard. Family will receive friends on Thursday, July 27, 2006 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the funeral home.
