Phyllis "Mama Jazz" Campbell, age 89 of Eaton, Ohio and formerly of Oxford, Ohio, died on Saturday, November 26, 2011 at home. Born on May 14, 1922, daughter of the late Clyde O. & Mary (Niswonger) Ashman. She was a 1940 Eaton High School graduate, a 1941 graduate of Miami Jacobs and attended Miami University. She joined the staff of Miami University in 1967 where she worked in the Personnel & Guidance Department and Graduate School retiring in 1994. In 1984 she began doing the Mama Jazz Show for WMUB radio station in Oxford for over 20 years. Grand Marshall for the Richmond Community Rose Festival Parade and had served as a Master of Ceremony for area jazz events. Preceded in death by brothers: Robert Ashman and Richard Ashman.
Survived by husband of 68 years, William H. Campbell of Eaton, OH; sons, Perry (Vera) Campbell of Alabama and William "Corky" (Becky) Campbell of Columbus, OH; daughters, Jane Campbell Gordon of Eaton, OH and Gail Campbell of Oxford, OH; brother, William Ashman of Muncie, IN; grandchildren, Chad A. (Brandi) Lee, Erica J. Gordon, Travis J. Gordon, Megan (Joel) Hofmann, Drew (Ashley) Johnson; great grandchildren, Jayna Lee, Jarod Lee, Hollis Hofman, Hayes Hofmann, Isabel Johnson; several nieces, nephews & cousins.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 2:30 pm to 5:30 pm, Saturday, December 10, 2011 at the Oxford Community Arts Center, 10 South College Avenue, Oxford, Ohio 45056. Music will be provided by Dave Greer & the Classic Jazz Stompers. Online Memorial Contributions may be made to the Starr-Gennett Foundation, Inc. at starrgennett.org.
