PAUL F. HOPPEL, age 86, of Eaton, Ohio, died Sunday, February 21, 2010, in Richmond, IN. Born on January 13, 1924 in Logan, Hocking Co., Ohio, he was born to the late Maynard & Verna Rachel (Strawn) Hoppel and the adopted son of the late Waldo and Velma Hoppel Augspurger of Dayton. Hired as a junior high school math and science teacher, he later served as Principal of Bruce Elementary School and Assistant Superintendent of Eaton City Schools. He retired in 1984 after 33 years with the Eaton system. Earlier in his career he also taught in schools in Darke and Butler counties. He was a graduate of the Otterbein Home High School in Lebanon, Ohio, of the University of Dayton with a Bachelor of Science Degree and Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he earned his Master's Degree in School Administration. He also was a Life Member of the Ohio Education Association and member and Past President of the Eaton Lions Club. He was a WW II U.S. Army Air Corp veteran and attended the Eaton United Church of Christ.
He was a devoted and caring husband and much loved father. His family, friends, colleagues and community members knew him for his honesty and sense of humor. He was a firm believer in the value of hard work and his life reflected all those characteristics.
Survived by his Wife of 60 years, Virginia (Evans) Hoppel, whom he married on November 26, 1949, in Dayton; Daughters, Linda (Dawn Bontrager) Hoppel, Mishawaka, IN and Cathy (Mark Harrell) Hoppel-Harrell of Marengo, Ohio; Sisters, Gladys Freidline, Xenia, Ohio, Mary Kay Reiss, Oak Park, VA; Nieces and Nephews.
Preceded in death by Brothers, Maynard, Jr. and Neil Hoppel.
Funeral Service will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, February 24, 2010, at Barnes Funeral Home, 220 E. Main St., Eaton, Ohio, with Rev. Roger L. Stine officiating. Interment will be held in Mound Hill Union Cemetery in Eaton. Family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 from 4 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home with Lions Club service at 6 p.m. The family also will receive friends on Wednesday one hour prior to service at the funeral home.
