Marion P. Alexander

MARION P. "ALEX" ALEXANDER, 87, of Eaton, Ohio died, Thursday, November 11, 2010 at Greenbriar Nursing Center in Eaton. Born on June 26, 1923 in Wayne County, Indiana, he was the son of the late George Henry and Miriam Lenore (Wilcox) Alexander. Alex was a 1941 graduate of Hollansburg High School and from 1943 to 1945 served in the U.S. Navy. He was a 1947 graduate of Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana where he received his Bachelor of Arts and a 1953 graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio where he received his Masters Degree in Math Education. Alex taught for 36 years, having taught in Jackson Township, Camden, Ohio and Wooster, Ohio. In 1954 Alex and his wife Jean moved to Eaton, where he taught in the Eaton City School District for 29 years retiring in 1983. Alex coached various sports including junior Varsity Basketball in Eaton for 16 years. He was a avid gardener and a active member of the Eaton United Church of Christ; the National Science Foundation for Modern Math; Teaching Techniques from 1961 to 1965; National Classroom Teachers of Math; Preble County Retired Teachers Association; Ohio Retired Teachers Association; National Education Association and a life member of the Ohio Education Association. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his brother, R. Maurice Alexander in 2008.

Alex is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jean E. (Downer) Alexander; children and spouses, Joyce E. (David) Hiebert of Tullahoma, Tennessee, Philip G. (Sarah) Alexander of Geneseo, Illinois, Donna J. (Patrick) Dandino of Burbank, California; sister and brother-in-law, Lois (Marshall) Daugherty of Richmond, Indiana; grandchildren, Jean E. and Mark A. Hiebert, Randall Scott and Donald Samuel Alexander, Alexander Michael and Patrick Paul Dandino; nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2010 at Eaton United Church of Christ, 113 W. Decatur St., Eaton, Ohio 45320, with Rev. Roger Stine officiating. Interment will be held in Palestine Cemetery in Palestine, Darke County, Ohio at the convenience of the family. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday and also after the service in the social room of the church.
