Malcolm E. Markley

Malcolm “Bob” Eugene Markley, 90, died on Monday, October 9th in the home that he built with his own hands. He was born on August 19, 1916, the 6th of nine children born to Pressley and Ida (Thompson) Markley in New Paris, Ohio, and was a 1934 Jefferson High School graduate. He served in US Army, 264th field artillery battalion, during WW II from 1941 until 1945, and saw action in France, Holland, and Germany. After the war he became a carpenter and was a member of the Carpenter’s Union in Ohio and Indiana. In 1947 he married Eva Crockett of Richmond, Indiana. They raised their two sons, Greg and Grant, in house that Malcolm built near Arcanum, Ohio. After Eva’s death from Lupus in 1965, Malcolm married Kathryn Klingman in 1967 and built their home on Pinehurst Drive in Richmond to his typical exacting standards. They would have celebrated their 39th wedding anniversary on October 13th. Malcolm was a devoted, husband and father, and a loving grandfather. He enjoyed helping other people, whether it was mowing lawns for neighbors or working on his sons’ homes. When he was 80, he traveled to Austin, Texas, to build a garage and workshop with his son, Greg. He passed along many skills and amazed his “helpers” with his stamina. In addition working with his hands, he liked to read, loved food, particularly tomatoes, and watched Lawrence Welk every week without fail. He was a long time member at Hard Body’s Gym and could still be seen there working out until a few months before his death.
