M. Carolyn Ellington, age 92, of Richmond, Indiana and formerly Eaton, Ohio, died Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Friends Fellowship Community. Born on June 30, 1921 in Harveysburg, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late William & Helen (Hartsock) Lukens. She was a 1939 graduate of Waynesville (Ohio) High School. In 1943, she graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana. Later in life, she returned to college at Miami University and majored in Library Science. She married Gene "Duke" Ellington in 1944 during WWII and raised four children. In 1980 she retired from Lewisburg High School where she had been the school librarian. While living in Eaton, she belonged to the Eaton United Church of Christ; however, she remained a Quaker throughout her life descending from a long line of Quakers. Although she was quite social and truly interested in the lives others, she also loved the peace and the grandeur of the out-of-doors. She could identify a multitude of plants, herbs and birds. She hiked the Grand Canyon-rim to rim, flew above the Arctic Circle to visit a small village, and celebrated her 80th birthday by taking a ride in a hot air balloon.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband Gene "Duke" Ellington in 2007 and a daughter in 1955; sisters: Lois Short, Martha Mahoney and brother Donald Lukens
She is survived by her sister Esther Greulich; sons and daughters-in-law: Stephen Scott (Judy) Ellington of Green Valley, Arizona and Mark B. (Renita) Ellington of Fort Wayne, Indiana; daughters and sons-in-law: Linda (Michael) Hill of Cincinnati, Ohio and Lee Ellington (Michael Deibele) of Salt Lake City, Utah; Grandchildren: Jennifer(Phillip) Paino of Fort Wayne, Indiana , Caleb (Stacia ) Ellington of Ft Wayne, Indiana, Emily E. Hill (Drew Chestnut) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Elliot E. Kovnick of Salt Lake City, Utah and three great grandchildren: Jathen Duke, Brady and Calaya Ellington of Ft. Wayne Indiana. Cousins, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m., Saturday, January 25, 2014 at the Friends Fellowship Community- 2030 Chester Blvd, Richmond, Indiana. Family will receive friends starting at 1:30 and there will be a reception held immediately following the service. She donated her body to the University Cincinnati Medical School.
