Lorene Davis Boyd (90) was born in Hazard, Kentucky, January 7, 1926 to Willie T. Davis and Nannie Bell King Davis. The beautiful daughter of the local grocer, she was forever touched by the early death of her beloved sister, Pauline Davis, from Rheumatic Fever in 1934. Ms. Davis attended Highland College for Teachers after her high school graduation in 1943. She married Gradie Boyd of Whitwell, Tennessee, a musician, singer, and coal miner, on November 17, 1944. They settled in Vicco, Kentucky where she taught school during the remainder of the Second World War.
After the war, and the birth of their first son, James Gradie, in 1946, the family moved to Fairfield, Indiana where Mrs. Davis Boyd continued to work with her father in their grocery store. Gradie and Lorene Davis Boyd moved to Camden, Ohio in 1959, shortly after the birth of their second son, Michael John. Their youngest son, Thomas Glenn was born in 1961.
A long-time member of the Camden Church of God, Lorene was church secretary to the late Reverend Vernon R. Hornsby during his pastor ship. Her work in fund-raising and planning helped to build the new sanctuary and move the little church from Second Street in Camden, to a hillside along US Route 127 where it stands today. She was also a long-time employee of Dayton Flexible Products in Eaton, Ohio where she made and maintained many close friendships.
Lorene long suffered from a debilitating anxiety disorder, and became largely housebound after the death of her husband, Gradie, in August of 1998… having cared for him for nearly 10 years during his decline. Mrs. Davis Boyd died quietly at The Knolls of Oxford during the morning of January 1, 2017 where she had been cared for during the final 7 years of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one sister and four brothers. She is survived by three sons, James Gradie Boyd and his wife Joy A. Boyd of Columbus, Indiana, Michael John Boyd of Dayton, Ohio and Thomas Glenn Boyd and wife Lisa Boyd also of Dayton, Ohio, and 8 grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at Barnes Funeral Home, 220 East Main Street, Eaton, OH. The Funeral Services will be 1:00 PM at the funeral home.
