Larry R. Gentry Sr., age 81 of Bloomington, Indiana crossed over on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN.
Larry was born on January 27, 1943, in Butler County, Ohio, the son of the late Clyde & Verna (VanWinkle) Gentry. Larry retired as an Upholsterer at Indiana University where had an expert reputation known across the state for his skill and hard-working ethics. In his younger years he led his brothers in forming the Gentry Brothers Band as the lead singer, sounding like Elvis Presley himself! The talented Gentry Brothers Band had great success, including being on Star Search and playing with various well-known artists, such as George Jones. The country rock band was also received into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame for their music accomplishments, and recording an original song called “Swanky”, recorded in 1961.
Larry met the love of his life, Nancy, when he was young. They were married for 40 years, built a beautiful life, and raised three children. He enjoyed watching his family grow, and his favorite personal passion of singing and playing music. Other things that brought him joy was karaoke, coffee, nature, and sweets. He had a natural skill with his hands and fixing things. He was an exemplary family protector, had strong traditional values, excelled as a provider, and instilled that into his family and those around him. If this wasn’t enough, there was hardly a moment where he wasn’t making people smile or laugh with his witty humor and making funny faces. Through it all, he genuinely enjoyed guiding us with his life wisdom and making the right heartfelt decisions through his spirit.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife in 2003, Nancy Virginia Gentry (Brown), and his brothers, Dale and Gary Gentry.
Larry is survived by his immediate and extended family including: Son - Larry & Lina Gentry, Jr. in Warrenton, Virginia; Daughter - Rita F. Gentry in Whiteland, Indiana; and Daughter - Rhonda & Dwight Doty in Trafalgar, Indiana. Grandchildren include Macy & Joey Davis; Seb Gentry; Great Granddaughter, Ellie Rue Davis, and many other family members.
