June Elizabeth Hemelgarn

June Elizabeth Meyer Hemelgarn, 97, born June 19, 1913 in Duluth, MN to Herman and Sarah (Schuler) Meyer, passed July 13, 2010. She was a former resident in the Trotwood community for over thirty years and a resident of Lewisburg for twenty-five years. June's life was filled with many accomplishments and experiences. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1931 and attended Behnke-Walker Business School, Portland, OR. During WWII, she along with thousands of women became known as "Rosie the Riveter". June was employed at Lockheed Aircraft Company in Burbank, CA where she helped to build the P-38 "Lightning" aircraft, and helped modify the Lockheed Constellation commercial aircraft to a C-47 troop carrier. In 1962, she graduated Cum Laude from the University of Dayton, OH. June was employed at Madison Township Schools, in Trotwood and taught at Broadmoor and Madison Park Elementary Schools for 21 years. Her former students will remember her drawings on the chalkboard and the "Gettysburg Address," a writing assignment for punishment! June began the" Monday Lunch Bunch" and was its last member. It was during those lunches that she, along with her husband, John, and her brothers and sisters-in-laws, enjoyed many countless hours with family and friends. During her lifetime she had visited all 50 states in the U.S. June spent her retirement years with her family, read hundreds of books, sewed family quilts and traveled. June was a member of Precious Blood Church for over fifty years. She was preceded in death by her husband, John A. Hemelgarn, her brothers Walter and David Meyer, son-in-law, R.W. Rogers, granddaughter, Lisette Jackson and the family's "adopted son and brother," Father Alan Sprenger.

June leaves behind, her sons James (Sandra) Hemelgarn of Lewisburg, OH, Jack Hemelgarn of Oakdale, MN, daughters, Dolores "Patches" Rogers of Miamisburg, OH, Diana (Angelo) Frole of Hillard, OH, Shelley Sullivan of Lewisburg, OH, Elizabeth "Betsy" (Allen) Young of Bartlett, TN, Roberta "Bobbie" Hemelgarn of Lewisburg, OH, a brother, John (Jane) Meyer of Duluth, MN, 20 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. The family celebrates her life for her strength of character, her tenacity for her ideals, and her enthusiasm for knowledge. The children of John and June Helmelgarn honor their mother's request and ask that all donations be given to The Robert W. Hemelgarn Memorial Foundation, 2515 West Stein Road, La Salle, MI 48145-9707.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30, Friday, July 16, at Calvary Cemetery, 1625 Calvary Ave, Dayton, OH in the chapel. The circle is Closed. Arrangements entrusted to Barnes Funeral Home – Lewisburg, OH. Condolences via Web site at www.barnesfuneralhome.com.
