James W. Mitchell, age 96, of Eaton, Ohio, died Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at Reid Hospital in Richmond, IN. Born on July 24, 1916 in Eaton, OH at the family home on state route 732, he was the son of the late Hugh C. & Inez (Rosencrans) Mitchell. Jim graduated in 1934 from Eaton High School and attended Miami University. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in January 1941. He served in Headquarters 3rd Bn. of the 147 Infantry Division spending 40 months in the South Pacific. He was discharged in August 1945 and returned to the family farm in Preble County. In 1947 he married Marian Morrow of Jackson Township. Lifetime member of First Presbyterian Church of Eaton; Charter member and first president of the Preble County Historical Society; numerous county boards; 12 years on the Eaton City School Board.
Preceded in death by wife: Marian (Morrow) Mitchell in 2010; Sister: Margaret Mitchell in 1973.
Survivors: Sons & Daughters-In-Law: James W. & Shirley (West) Mitchell, Jr.; Dr. Richard & Cindy (Chandler) Mitchell both of Eaton, OH and John T. & Joanna (Farthing) Mitchell of London, OH. 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held 11:30 AM Saturday October 6, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church – 123 West Decatur Street – Eaton, Ohio with Rev. Wayne D. Morrison officiating. Family will receive friends on Saturday from 9:00 to 11:30 AM prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in Mound Hill Cemetery in Eaton, OH.
