James R. McWhinney

James R. McWhinney, 79, of New Paris, Ohio, died Monday, April 29, 2024 at his residence. Born on February 26, 1945 in Richmond, Indiana, he was the son of the late Robert J. and Carmen (Frazier) McWhinney. Jim retired in 2005 after 37 years as a School Teacher for Richmond City Schools. He was a 1963 Jackson Township High School graduate and earned his BA Degree in Education in 1968 from Wilmington College and later earned his Master of Education Degree from Miami University in 1972. He did his student teaching in Sabina, Ohio and was hired in 1968 as a Social Studies teacher at Test Middle School in Richmond. After retirement, he was a substitute teacher in Preble County and had also worked for Barnes Funeral Home. Jim was a long-time Jackson Township farmer, served as a school board member and President of C.R. Coblentz School District, Palladium Publishing in Richmond, Preble County Farm Bureau, Farm Credit Services in Eaton, Richmond Association of Classroom Teachers, Indiana State Teachers Association, National Educational Association, Jackson Baseball Booster Organization, Jackson High School Alumni Association, former member of Prices Creek Church of the Brethren where he served on several committees and is currently a member of the New Hope Church. Jim loved traveling with the History Club at Test Middle School for 30 years and loved traveling to Texas and Florida to visit family and friends.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a granddaughter: Kaylee Hix in 2022.

Survived by his wife of 56 years: Karen E. (Keller) McWhinney, Daughter: Yvonne S. (Morty) Hix; Sons: Greg M. (Alisha) McWhinney and Kurt R. (Kollyn) McWhinney; Grandchildren: Kannon, Kenzie, Adalyn, Jacob and Brinley McWhinney.

The Funeral Service will be held at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 4, 2024 at Barnes Funeral Home, 220 East Main Street, Eaton, Ohio with Pastor Rodney Dunn officiating. The interment will be held in Spring Lawn Cemetery in New Paris, Ohio. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
