GERALDINE R. "GERRIE" BUCHANAN, age 81, formerly of New Paris, OH, died Saturday, Decembr 27, 2008 in Salem, OR. Born on July 29, 1927 in Bloomington, IL, she was the daughter of the late Chuck & Mary (Totterer) Burden. Gerrie was raised in Dayton, OH and married Robert Tate in 1946. After her divorce, Gerrie married Edward "Eddie" Buchanan and they ran the Country Side Inn in New Paris, OH from 1970 to 1990. They were Lifetime members of the American Legion and AMVets. After Eddie died, Gerrie moved to Salem in 2001 to live with her daughter Shelley, and eventually moved into her own apartment. She was an active member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church, including the 39ers Club and the Peace and Justice League. She had also been a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Salem, OR and St. John's in New Paris.
Gerrie loved spending time with her grandchildren. She loved garage sales and playing card games and board games with her friends at her apartment complex. She had a great sense of humor, including the ability to laugh at herself. She was quick to offer help to those in need and had a special place in her heart for people with developmental disabilities.
Survived by her daughter, Shelley Joyce of Salem, OR; sons, Mike & Barbara Tate of Seymore, MO, Rob Tate & Janice Stevens of Richmond, IN; sister, Joanne Warden of Dayton, OH. Three step children, Lisa, Jaimie and Mike; Five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, January 10, 2009 at St. John's Catholic Church on North Spring Street in New Paris, OH with the Rev. J. Thomas Fitzsimmons officiating. Interment will be held at Spring Lawn Cemetery in New Paris. Family and friends will gather at the Clarence Teaford Post #360 of the American Legion, 215 North Washington Street, New Paris, OH after the graveside service for lunch and fellowship.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Northwest Emergency Squad, 135 North Washington Street, New Paris, OH 45347.
