George L. Petitt, Sr. 85 of Eldorado, Ohio was born April 23, 1928 in Macbeth, West "BY GOD" Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents Crell and Pearl Marie (Oberhausen) Petitt of Eldorado, Ohio; brother, Richard Petitt; brother-n-law, Rufus Baker; his sister, Amy (Petitt) Baker; father and mother-n-law, A.C. and Vada (Rice) Philliips of Trotwood, Ohio; and, granddaughter, Lena Mariah Rose McCollough of Niceville, Florida. George passed away peacefully at 12:50 a.m. Saturday May 25, 2013.
He married Rose Marie (Phillips) on December 31, 1979 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his children George L. Jr. and Melinda Petitt of Florence, Kentucky; Carol Milnes and family of Phoenix, Arizona; William Howard and Vada Marie (Campbell) McCollough of Fort Worth, Texas; Governor F. "Buddy" and Renee Campbell and family of Dayton, Ohio; Colina Mickie and Carrie Beth (McDaniel) McBride of Ft. Worth, Texas; Nathan and Angie McBride (currently deployed in Kandahar, Afghanistan with the Army National Guard) of New Carlisle, Ohio; 16 grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his chihuahua Molly Belle, who he loved and cared for dearly for 8 years.
George graduated in May 1946 from Logan High School of Logan, West Virginia. Upon his graduation on May 28, 1946 at the age of 18, he joined the United States Marine Corps, later to be honorably discharged in 1947 as World War II ended. He served on the USS Portsmouth from November 22 to August 21, 1947. He received a Medal of Good Conduct for his service to his country. George was a lifetime member of AMVETS of Eldorado, OH; American Legion of West Manchester, OH and VFW of Greenville, OH. George retired twice after serving in the military as a Marine, once from Chrysler Airtemp in Dayton, Ohio after 27 years, then onto retiring for the second time from General Dynamics/Lockheed Martin after 20 years. Upon his final retirement he and his wife relocated back to Eldorado.
George generously donated his body to Wright State University School of Science. Interment will be in Rockafield Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio.
A Memorial Service will be held 6:30 PM Tuesday, June 25, 2013 at the Greenbriar Nursing Home – Assisted Living Dining Room – 501 West Lexington Road Eaton, Ohio.
