Gary Lee Curl, age 64 of New Madison, OH, passed away peacefully Monday evening, July 21, 2014 at Dayton V.A. Medical Center after a courageous fight with acute leukemia. Born on September 20, 1949 in Centerville, Iowa he was the son of Everett & Francis Lucille (Wolver) Curl.
Gary served with the U.S. Marine Corps as a young man, serving in the second Tet Offensive Vietnam in 1968 where he earned a Purple Heart. When he came home from Vietnam, Gary served as a police officer in Oskaloosa and sheriff's deputy in Mahaska County. He was a master craftsman, gun enthusiast, lifetime member of the N.R.A. and avid animal lover, caring for their farm with his wife Carol. During the past several years, he treasured time with his comrades at the Veterans Administration. Gary was a published author of several poems.
Left behind to cherish his memory is his loving wife: Carol Y. (Lipps) Curl whom he married on April 2, 1988. With her live their current "children", dachshunds Jake, Emma and Eli who will sadly miss Gary daily. His sons & daughters-in-law: Erik & MaryAnn Curl of Washington; Troy & Janice Bowen of Texas; Tony & Marta Call of Richmond, IN and Travis & Deanna Call of New Madison, OH; brother: Richard (Chris) Curl of Wisconsin; brother-in-law: Doug (Jo) Lipps of New Madison, OH: grandchildren: Derek Bane of Virginia; Michael Bane of New Madison, OH; Grayson, Seaver and Brady Bowen of Texas; Taylor Call & friend Skylar Alvey and Austin Call of New Paris, OH; Logan Call of New Madison, OH; Tristan and Liam Curl of Washington and Jamie (Ryan) Seal of Williamsburg, IN; great grandchildren: Logan Seal, Elin Seal and Landon Taylor. Several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 28, 2014 at Barnes Funeral Home – 220 East Main Street – Eaton, OH with Chaplain Kenneth Boyd officiating. Interment will be in Greenmond Cemetery – New Madison, OH with full military services provided by the Preble County Honor Guard. Family will receive friends on Sunday July 27, 2014 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM and Monday one hour prior to the funeral service at the funeral home.
