DONALD E. STONE, age 89, of Eaton, Ohio died Friday, June 6, 2008 in Richmond, IN. Born on May 29, 1919 in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of the late William Allen and Laura McDonald (Palmer) Stone, Sr. He graduated from Norwood High School and attended Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. He worked as a salesman for Lever Brothers prior for joining the Ohio National Guard Calvary on February 8, 1941, serving as Company "C" Bugler and Sergeant in charge of the regiment's food and clothing. He trained to become a pilot after becoming an Army Air Force Cadet Captain, and later transferred to ground control as Base Manager. During World War II he served in Marrakech, Oran, and Agidir, North Africa and Casa Blanca. Following his Honorable Discharge in November, 1945, he returned to Lever Brothers as senior salesman in Preble and Montgomery County, Ohio. During his professional life, he had worked 23 years for J. Hungerford Smith Co. in Rochester, New York and Humboldt, Tennessee and United Fruit Company in New York, New York and Boston, Mass and retired from Combined Insurance in Chicago, Illinois in 1989. Lifetime Charter Member of the National WW II Memorial, member of The American Legion Post #215, Eaton, Ohio, Life Member of F& A.M. Dearborn Lodge #172, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels and Norwood City Schools' Alumni Association. Preceded in death by Brothers: William Allen and Maynard Stone.
Survived by Wife of 61 years: Joanne (Aker) Stone; daughter, Laurie Stone Bowers; son, William (Bill) Stone; five grandchildren, Chad Bowers, Ben Bowers, Jill Bowers Aycock, Brent Stone, Jesse Stone and one great-grandchild, Alex Aker Aycock.
Graveside Service with military honors by the Preble County Guard will be held on Tuesday, June 10, 2008 - 1:00 p.m. in Mound Hill Union Cemetery, Eaton, Ohio with Rev. Steven G. Cann officiating. There will be no public calling.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Eaton Emergency Squad - P.O. Box 27 - Eaton, Ohio.
